Youth Sustainability Leadership Program Supports Community Action
Wednesday, January 18, 2017
The City of Cleveland Mayor’s Office of Sustainability partnered with Earth Day Coalition to coordinate the Student Environmental Leadership Conference for hundreds of Greater Cleveland high school students. The conference, led by students participating in the Office of Sustainability’s Youth Sustainability Leadership Program, featured a presentation from the 2016 Sustainability Summit, themed Year of Sustainable Transportation, and several workshops highlighting Sustainable Cleveland’s 2017 theme, Year of Vibrant Green Space. Carol Thaler, Director of Administration and Outreach at Great Lakes Biomimicry, provided the keynote speech, and professionals from Holden Arboretum, Cleveland Metroparks, Let’s Move! YMCA, and the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District provided workshop support as expert facilitators.
Enhanced by building networking relationships throughout local, state and national regions, environmental leadership supports visionary and action-oriented plans for a sustainable future. As such, a primary outcome of the Student Environmental Leadership Conference will be student-led community service projects supporting vibrant green space and other sustainability initiatives in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. Students will be invited to showcase these projects at Earth Day Coalition’s annual EarthFest event on April 22nd, 2017.
