The James H. Walker Construction Management Course is a ten week, twenty session course. The course is taught by experienced construction professionals and includes education in contracting, marketing, procurement, bonding, scheduling, cost accounting, estimating, and project planning. Participants learn how to become certified with the City of Cleveland, obtain financing, bid on City contracts and prepare business plans.
Approximately 1,347 entrepreneurs, trades people, and professional architects, engineers, surveyors and others who have taken this course are operating well-known and respected businesses. The course is named in honor of the late James Walker, a former OEO employee who dedicated most of his professional life to helping minorities develop construction and general contracting businesses.
Citizen's Police Academy

This program for residents 18 and older covers topics such as legal issues, police officer training and preparedness, internet crimes against children. It includes a tour of the Justice Center and Police headquarters, the outdoor range, communication center and Police Museum. It may also include presentations by Canine, Narcotics, and SWAT units.
Professional Healthcare, Safety and Rescue Workers Certification/Recertification

The Education/Continuing Education and Training Section of the Division of Emergency Medical Services conducts training, certification and recertification for healthcare, safety and rescue professionals. Classes include Certification/recertification for BLS, ACLS, PEPP, GEMS, PBTLS, BTLS, WMD and BLS/First Aid. Attendees must show a photo ID and should bring the certification card that is up for renewal. Training takes place at 1701 Lakeside Ave.

Cadet training is usually held Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but hours may vary based upon training needs. Cadets are required to take weekly written exams as well as a comprehensive final. They must pass a final physical fitness test during their evaluation phase which involves sit-ups, push-ups and a 1 ½ mile run (minimum passing requirements are determined by age). A minimum passing score of 80% or higher is required on all examinations. Cadets are prohibited from utilizing sick time until after their completion of Academy training.
EMS Cadet Four-phase Training Process
Orientation: In this initial three week phase, cadets are issued uniforms and equipment and instructed on the Academy’s rules, policies, and procedures. Cadets also receive training required for all City employees, and enroll in benefits programs.
Certification: Over the next eight weeks, cadets receive additional certification training and testing and are required to pass the City's Standard of Patient Care Protocol Examination.
Evaluation: For four to six weeks, cadets ride in ambulances with certified Field Training Officers and apply their education and training under the close guidance of experienced Paramedics.
Probation: Probation ends six months after hire. During this phase the cadet is released to the field as a functioning EMT.
