Mayor Frank G. Jackson Appoints Michael Spreng as Secretary of the Civil Service Commission

CLEVELAND – Mayor Frank G. Jackson on Monday, Jan. 14 appointed Michael Spreng as Secretary of the Civil Service Commission. Click here to view photos from the ceremony.

Spreng began his career with the City as an Examiner in the Civil Service Commission office in 2012 and was promoted to Manager in 2017. Prior to joining the City of Cleveland, Spreng practiced with several firms before becoming a Partner with the McDonald Hopkins firm specializing in corporate, employment and business law.  

During that time he was active in the recruitment and training of new lawyers, a focus which continues to this day. Spreng is a past section officer of the Cleveland Bar Association and served as a Trustee of the American Lung Association of Northeast Ohio for many years. 

He currently chairs the Public Safety Hiring Strategy Committee. Spreng is a graduate of Valparaiso University and a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law where he was an Editor of the International Law Journal. 

Mayor Jackson also appointed Valarie J. McCall as the Chief of Communications on Tuesday, Jan. 15. McCall has served as acting communications chief since 2015. In that role, she oversees the City of Cleveland’s communications strategy, media relations and brand identity. McCall will also retain her position as Chief of Government and International Affairs.
